Beautiful Oil Filters

Would you pay $200 for an oil filter? You might if you thought it would help your gas mileage, and help your engine last longer. This month's images are of oil filters built by Pure Power, a small company in Huntington Beach, CA. The filters are not disposable, you clean them and use them again. The filters have small magnets in them, which pull out metal shavings from the oil, and reduce wear on your engine.

As this is a small company, no budget for props was available. I had to use what I had in the studio, and was only given money to buy a few pieces of background paper. I had to shoot 55 products in various arrangements over 2 days. This gave me about 15-20 minutes for each styled "beauty shot" and about 3 minutes for each "catalog shots" on white backgrounds. See http://www.photographer-product.com/html/catalogs.html for a comparison of catalog and beauty shots.

I had a leather shirt in my closet, which I thought would be a good background for the Harley Davidson and crotch rocket motorcycle oil filters. I created lots of shadow at the top of the image, to allow for text in the magazine advertisements. Other props were already in the studio, so it was just a matter of setting them up.
