Let Them Eat Cake!
Last week I did another photo shoot for Cordie Cakes, Inc., a chocolate and champagne cake. These cakes taste amazing, rich and buttery, but light. My previous shoot for them was a full day, and used the services of an outstanding prop stylist. However last week's shoot was for just two cakes, so I brainstormed with the clients about props and they brought them to the studio. See more dessert samples at http://www.photographerfood.com/htm/desserts.htm
Some of the cake images are scheduled to appear in Oprah's magazine "O", as soon as the corporate website is finished at http://www.cordiecakes.com (all the images on the site are by Davis Photographic) The entry page has endorsement quotes from Jada Pinkett Smith, Lionel Richie and Tito Jackson, and for good reason - these are some of the best cakes you will ever taste.
The larger images in this newsletter are the ones shot last week, the smaller ones at the bottom were done last year. The best part of a food shoot is eating the props, but I have to say I had a great time experimenting with various flowers, cloth backgrounds, cake stands and other props to achieve the best result.
The way I light food is a mix of hard and soft light. The hard light shapes the cakes and creates highlights and shadows. The soft light softens the shadows and lets you see details in the darker areas. Small reflectors bounce light into specific areas to bring a warm glow to the front of the cakes. Notice the chocolate cake and out the light shapes it and makes it seem 3-D.
